Winter car key card
Fold this and keep it in the car. It covers the cold-morning problems before they become a lockout.
Before the cold
- Know where the hidden metal key in your fob is and practise using it
- Know where your push-to-start backup spot is (check the owner's manual)
- Keep a spare fob battery of the right type at home, out of reach of children
- Keep lock de-icer in your coat or bag, not inside the car
- Know where your spare key is, and that it's not in the car
- Keep a photo of your registration on your phone: a new key needs proof of ownership and the VIN
Frozen lock or door
- Try every other door and the trunk
- Use lock de-icer, never hot water
- Don't force the key: a bent or snapped key makes it a bigger job
- If the lock turns but the door won't open, the seal is frozen: push in firmly before pulling
Fob not working
- Warm the fob in your hand or pocket and try again
- Use the metal key to get in
- Hold the fob against the start button or backup spot
Remote starter running
- Never leave the only key inside a car that's running
- Never run or remote-start the car inside a closed garage
- If a child or pet is locked inside, call 911 first
