What does a residential locksmith do?
A residential locksmith secures the doors of a home: rekeying locks so old keys stop working, replacing worn or weak locks with new deadbolts, installing keypad and smart locks, and getting people back in when they are locked out. Many also handle garage door locks and safes.
Rekey when the locks are good
A rekey resets the pins in each lock so only your new key works. It suits a house where the hardware is sound and the question is simply who else has a key.
Change the lock when the hardware isn't
Worn cylinders, deadbolts that only throw halfway, damage from a break-in, or a builder-grade lock you don't trust: those call for a lock change and a properly fitted new deadbolt.
Keyless entry that copes with winter
A keypad or smart lock means no keys to lose and codes you can change from your phone. Exterior keypads face the full Winnipeg winter, so we talk through batteries and a backup key before fitting one.
Older homes and newer subdivisions
Winnipeg's housing stock asks for different things. In the older neighbourhoods we meet original hardware, doors that swell and shrink with the seasons, and strike plates that no longer line up. In newer subdivisions on the edge of the city, the common job is a possession-day rekey, because nobody knows how many builder and trade keys went out during construction.
Don't forget the garage
The overhead door, its lock and the side door into the garage are part of your home's security. The side-door deadbolt is a normal lock job; the overhead door's lock and hardware are covered on garage door repair.

Questions people ask
- Should I rekey or replace my locks?
- If the locks work well, rekey them. If they are worn, damaged or too weak for the door, replace them. We tell you which on the visit, before any work starts.
- Do you work on older Winnipeg homes?
- Yes. Older houses often have original hardware, painted-over strikes and doors that have shifted with the seasons. We look at the door as well as the lock, because a deadbolt that can't reach its strike isn't protecting anything.
- Can you help with a sliding patio door?
- Patio doors have their own locks and latches. Tell us the make if you know it, and send a photo; we confirm what we can do before booking.
- I'm locked out of my house right now.
- That's the emergency side. Go to the house lockout page or call us now.
