My garage door won't open and my car is inside. What should I do?

Check for a power outage or a tripped opener first. If you see a gap in a spring above the door, or a loose cable, don't lift the door or pull the release, because the door may be far heavier than usual and can drop. Call a garage door technician.

First, rule out the easy things

  • Power. Is there a power outage, or did a breaker trip? A dead opener light is a clue.
  • The wall button and remote. Is the opener locked out (vacation lock) or is the remote battery dead?
  • The safety sensors. The two small eyes near the floor must see each other. Snow, ice or a bumped bracket stops a door from closing, though not from opening.

If those check out and the door still won't move, the problem is usually mechanical.

Don't touch a broken spring

The springs carry most of the door's weight. When one breaks, the door can suddenly be far heavier than you expect.

  • Look above the door for a gap in the coils of the spring.
  • Don't pull the release cord if a spring or cable looks broken. The door can drop.
  • Don't try to lift the door with your car or by hand.
  • Keep children and pets clear of the door.

Springs are under high tension and cause real injuries. This is a job for a technician with the right bars and parts. Garage door spring repair.

Getting your car out

We come any hour. Usually the fastest safe way out is to replace or secure the broken spring or cable so the door opens normally. Sometimes we can open and secure the door that night and finish the repair in the morning. Either way, you hear the price before we start.

Openers, cables and tracks

Not every stuck door is a spring. A burnt-out opener, a snapped cable, or a door off its track can all trap a car. We handle all of them, residential and commercial. All garage door repairs.

Questions people ask

How do I know if a spring is broken?
Look above the closed door. A torsion spring with a visible gap in its coils is broken. You may also have heard a loud bang from the garage. The opener may hum or lift a few inches and stop.
Can I use the manual release cord?
Only if the springs and cables look intact and the door is fully closed. With a broken spring, the door can be too heavy to hold and may drop. If you're unsure, leave it and call.
Do springs break more in winter?
Cold is hard on garage door springs and openers, and many people notice failures on frigid Winnipeg mornings. A spring near the end of its life often goes on a cold day.
Do you do commercial overhead doors too?
Yes. We handle residential and commercial garage and overhead doors, including springs, cables, openers, tracks and panels.
