Why does my garage door reverse before it closes?
The most common cause is the safety sensors near the floor. If snow, ice, a leaf or a knock has blocked or misaligned them, the opener thinks something is in the way and reverses. Clean the lenses and check that both sensor lights are steady. If it still reverses, the opener's force or travel settings, or the door itself, need attention.
The opener only guides the door
A healthy garage door is balanced by its springs. The opener just moves it. When an opener struggles, check the door first: a broken spring, a frayed cable or a door frozen to the floor will make any opener look broken. Pull the release only with the door fully closed, and if the door is heavy to lift by hand, the problem isn't the opener.
Common opener faults
- Door reverses before closing: blocked or misaligned safety sensors, or force settings out of adjustment.
- Motor hums, door doesn't move: disconnected trolley, stripped gear, or a broken chain or belt.
- Remote or keypad dead: batteries first, then reprogramming or replacement.
- Works in summer, struggles in winter: cold grease in the tracks, a seal frozen to the floor, or an opener working at its limit.
Snow and the safety sensors
The two small sensors either side of the door, just above the floor, are the most common winter culprit. Snow blown in, ice building at the threshold or a shovel knocking one out of line makes the door reverse every time. Wipe the lenses, clear the snow and check both lights are steady before calling.
New openers
If the opener is worn out, we fit a new one, set the force and travel to your door, test the safety reverse and pair every remote and keypad you want to keep. Ask about battery backup and phone control when you book. If the whole door is due, see garage door installation.

Questions people ask
- My opener runs but the door doesn't move. Why?
- Either the opener has been disconnected from the door (check the release), or something has failed between the motor and the door, such as a stripped gear or a broken chain or belt. If a spring is broken, the opener can't lift the door at all. Don't keep running it.
- Can you pair a new remote or keypad?
- Yes, for most opener brands. Bring the remotes you have so we can pair them all at once, and remove any you have lost.
- Should I repair my old opener or replace it?
- If parts are available and the rest is sound, repair. If it's old, noisy, hard to get parts for, or lacks modern safety features, replacing it is usually the better buy. We tell you which before starting.
- Can you add phone control to my opener?
- Many openers can take a smart controller. Tell us the brand and model when you book and we'll confirm.
