Garage door spring repair in Winnipeg
If you heard a loud bang from the garage and now the door won't lift, a spring has probably broken. Don't try to lift the door or run the opener. We replace broken torsion and extension springs, any hour, and balance the door afterwards.

How do I know if my garage door spring is broken?
Signs of a broken spring: a loud bang from the garage, a visible gap in the coil of the spring above the door, a door that feels far heavier than usual, an opener that strains or stops after a few inches, or a door that rises crooked. Stop using the door and call a technician; springs hold a lot of stored tension.
Springs do the lifting, not the opener
A garage door can weigh more than a person can safely lift. The springs carry that weight, so that the opener, or your arm, only has to guide it. When a spring breaks, the door suddenly weighs its full weight. That's why the opener strains and stops, and why lifting it by hand is dangerous.
Signs your spring has gone
- a loud bang from the garage, often when nobody was using the door;
- a gap of a few centimetres in the coil of the spring above the door;
- the opener hums, lifts the door a little and stops or reverses;
- the door goes up crooked, or one cable hangs slack;
- the door feels far heavier than it should.
Torsion and extension springs
Most newer homes have torsion springs: one or two coils on a metal shaft above the door. Older doors and some single garages use extension springs that run along each side above the horizontal tracks. Both store a lot of energy. We replace either type, match the spring to the weight of your door, and balance the door afterwards so it stays put halfway open.
Don't touch it, and don't pull the release
Winding bars, slipping springs and a door that drops without warning cause real injuries. If a spring is broken:
- don't run the opener again;
- don't pull the emergency release cord with the door open, because a door with no working spring can drop;
- keep people and cars out from under the door.

Questions people ask
- Can I replace a garage door spring myself?
- We strongly advise against it. Torsion springs are wound under heavy tension and can cause serious injury if they slip during adjustment. This is a job for someone with the right tools and training.
- Should both springs be replaced if only one broke?
- On a door with two springs, they are usually the same age and have done the same work, so the second one is often close behind. We'll show you its condition and you decide.
- Can I still open the door with a broken spring?
- Don't. Without the spring, the full weight of the door is on the opener and on you. If a car is trapped inside, call us and we'll help you get it out safely.
- What's the difference between torsion and extension springs?
- Torsion springs sit on a shaft above the door and twist to lift it. Extension springs run along the horizontal tracks and stretch. Most newer residential doors use torsion springs.
