What does a commercial locksmith do?

A commercial locksmith secures business premises: rekeying when staff leave, repairing and replacing storefront and office locks, installing master key systems and card or fob access control, and repairing or installing panic bars and other exit hardware. Many also handle overhead and loading doors.

Rekey when staff turn over

A former employee with a key is a door you no longer control. Rekeying the affected locks makes their key useless the same day, without replacing hardware. For houses and single doors, our rekeying page explains the method; for businesses we plan which doors change and who gets new keys, so the right people can still get in on Monday morning.

Storefront, office and warehouse locks

Aluminum storefront doors, office suites, back doors onto the lane and warehouse man-doors each use different hardware. Winnipeg's freeze and thaw is hard on exterior commercial doors, and a lock that drags is usually a door or closer problem as much as a lock problem. We repair what can be repaired and replace what can't, and tell you which before starting.

Panic bar repair and installation

Panic bars, also called exit devices or push bars, are on most rear doors, storefronts and exits in commercial buildings. We do all of it: repairs, adjustments, outside trim and brand new installs.

  • Repairs. A bar that sticks, a latch that won't catch, a door that won't stay locked, a dogging function that has stopped working, or a bar that was damaged by a forced entry. Winter is hard on them: salt, grit and a door that shifts with the frost all wear the latch and strike.
  • New installs. Replacing a worn out device, or fitting an exit device to a door that needs one, matched to the door and how it's used.
  • Outside trim. A lever trim so staff can get in from outside with a key, or a rim cylinder so the door can be unlocked from outside. If the outside of the door has no hardware at all, we can add it.
  • Keys that match. The cylinder on the panic bar can be keyed to your other doors or brought into your master key system.

Our guide to commercial door lock types explains how exit devices compare with levers, mortise locks and storefront deadbolts.

When keys stop being enough

Once you have many doors and many people, loose keys become a liability. Two step-ups:

  • Master key systems: each person gets one key that opens only their doors, and managers get a key that opens more. Restricted keys can't be copied at a hardware store.
  • Access control: cards or fobs instead of keys, and a lost card is switched off, not rekeyed.

One supplier for every door

Locks, panic bars, master keys, access control and the overhead door at the back: we look after all of them, so there's one call when something fails. Overhead, sectional and loading doors are on commercial garage doors. Property managers and landlords can set up an account on the landlords page.

Questions people ask

An employee left with a key. What should we do?
Rekey the doors that key opens, the same week if you can. If keys walk out regularly, a master key system with restricted keys or card access is usually cheaper over time.
Do you repair and install panic bars?
Yes. We repair panic bars that stick, won't latch or won't lock, and we install brand new exit devices, including ones with a lever trim or a rim cylinder on the outside for keyed entry.
Can you add a key or lever to the outside of a panic bar door?
Yes. We fit outside trim to exit devices: a lever trim for entry with a key, or a rim cylinder so the door can be opened from outside with a key. Tell us the make of the bar if you can see it, and we'll match the trim.
Can you work after hours?
Booked commercial work can be scheduled around your opening hours. Tell us when the doors can be out of service.
Do you set up accounts for property managers?
Yes. See the landlords page for turnover rekeys, master keys and invoicing.
