Rekey your locks in Winnipeg
Rekeying keeps your locks and changes the key. We reset the pins inside each cylinder, so every old key stops working and one new key opens the doors you choose.

What does rekeying a lock mean?
Rekeying means changing the pins inside a lock cylinder so it works with a new key. The lock stays on the door, the old keys stop working, and several locks can be set to the same new key. It is usually the cheaper choice when the hardware itself is in good shape.
Rekeying changes who has a key, not the lock
Inside most house locks is a row of small pins that line up only when the right key is in. Rekeying swaps those pins for a new set and gives you new keys to match. The lock body, the handle and the deadbolt stay on your door. Every key cut for the old pins, including the ones a previous owner, a contractor or an ex-roommate still has, stops working.
When people in Winnipeg rekey
- After moving in. Builders, realtors, trades and the previous owners may all have had keys. Our new home page covers the whole possession-day list.
- After lost or stolen keys, especially if the keys were on a ring with your address or a car fob.
- Between tenants, for rentals and condos. Landlords can set up an account on the landlords page.
- To get one key for every door. Front, back and the garage side door on one key is the most common request we get on a booked visit.
Rekey or new locks?
If your locks turn smoothly, latch properly and are a reasonable grade for the door, rekeying is usually the better buy. If a lock is worn, loose, damaged in a break-in or binding every cold snap, we recommend a lock change instead and explain why before any work starts. Our guide on whether to rekey or replace lays out the trade-off.
What happens on the visit
We look at each lock first, confirm which doors you want on the new key and tell you the price before we start. Each cylinder comes out, gets new pins and goes back in, and we test every door with the new keys before we leave. You approve the price before we start; read our price promise for how that works.
We rekey homes across the city and in the towns listed on our areas page.
Where we go
All of Winnipeg and the towns around it. See every area we cover, and we tell you the real arrival time on the phone.
Questions people ask
- Will my old keys still work after a rekey?
- No. Once the pins are reset, the old keys no longer turn the lock. That is the whole point.
- Can every door in the house use one key?
- Often, yes, if the locks share the same keyway, which is common when they are the same brand. If your front door and back door are different brands, we tell you on the spot what it takes to get them on one key.
- When is rekeying not enough?
- When a lock is worn, damaged after a break-in, sticking in the cold, or simply too weak for the door. Then a lock change is the right fix, and we say so before starting.
- Can you rekey the side door into the garage?
- Yes. A pin-tumbler deadbolt on the garage side door is rekeyed like any other entry lock, and it is one of the doors people most often forget.
- Do landlords rekey between tenants?
- Many do. We set up landlord and property manager accounts for turnover rekeys; see the landlords page.
