Master key systems in Winnipeg
A master key system lets each person carry one key that opens only their doors, while a manager's key opens more. We plan the system with you, set up the locks, and keep a record of who holds which key.

How does a master key system work?
In a master key system, each lock is pinned to accept two or more keys: its own individual key and one or more higher-level keys. A tenant's or employee's key opens only their own doors, a supervisor's key opens a group of doors, and the master key opens all of them.
One key per person, the right doors for each
A master key system replaces a ring of keys with one key each. The suite tenant opens their suite and the front door. The cleaner opens the common areas and the janitor's closet. The property manager opens everything. Each lock is pinned to accept more than one key, in a planned hierarchy.
Where it fits in Winnipeg buildings
- Apartment blocks and walk-ups: a key per suite, the front entrance, laundry, storage and the boiler room, with a master for the caretaker.
- Offices and clinics: a key per office, shared rooms on a group key, and a master for whoever opens up.
- Shops and light industrial: separate keys for the front, the stockroom and the lane door, so each staff member opens only what they need.
Planning comes first
We list every door, everyone who needs access and what they need to open, then design the levels before touching a lock. You get a key schedule showing which key opens which door. Keep it somewhere safe: it is the map of your building.
Key control
A master system only stays secure if keys stay accounted for. Restricted keyways mean copies come only through us with your authorisation, not from a hardware store kiosk. We keep a record of keys issued, so when someone leaves, you know exactly what to collect or rekey.
Next step
Book a walk-through. You get the plan and the price before any locks change: see our price promise. Master keying is part of our commercial locksmith work; if people change often, compare it with access control. Landlords can set up an account on the landlords page. We cover the city and the towns on our areas page.
Where we go
All of Winnipeg and the towns around it. See every area we cover, and we tell you the real arrival time on the phone.
Questions people ask
- Is a master key system secure?
- Yes, when the keys are controlled. A planned system with restricted keys that can't be copied at a hardware store, and a record of who holds which key, is far more secure than a drawer of loose, unlabelled keys.
- What happens if the master key is lost?
- The locks it opens need rekeying, which is why master keys are kept to as few people as possible and recorded.
- Can you add to our existing system?
- Often, yes, if we know how the existing system was set up. If nobody has the records, we can survey the locks and plan from there.
- Should we use access control instead?
- If people change often or you need a record of who opened which door, access control may suit you better. We'll tell you which fits.
